On islands few aid agencies can reach, our Guinea-Bissau teams have built a rice field that feeds 1,700 people, run a medical camp in Bafatá, and given orphans a chance at a normal life, meeting fundamental needs in one of the world's least-funded nations.
Guinea-Bissau consistently ranks among the world's least developed nations. Political instability, limited infrastructure and chronic underfunding of public services have left millions of its citizens without access to adequate food, healthcare or education. Humanity First UK is one of very few international charities maintaining an active programme in this overlooked country.
Our Global Health work runs annual medical camps in Bissau, Bafatá and Farim, serving rural patients and providing cutting-edge medical training for local doctors. These camps treat roughly 1,000 people every year. Our Gift of Sight programme restores eyesight to 30+ patients annually, in a country with one of the smallest specialist ophthalmology workforces in the world.
In Bissau itself we run two skills centres. An IT centre delivers short courses in basic computer skills for students who would otherwise have no exposure to digital workplaces, and a sewing centre trains women in tailoring as a route to sustainable income. Across the country we also support women-led livelihoods through milling machines, cassava grinders and community gardens.
