Humanity First is building medical diagnostic centres in rural Africa. Each centre has its own laboratory, so a patient can be seen and treated in one place, close to home. Two are currently being built, with more to follow.

The need
Access to healthcare in rural Africa is a major challenge for people mired in poverty. Around 287 million people in sub-Saharan Africa live more than two hours’ travel from the nearest public hospital, according to a study in The Lancet Global Health. Sub-Saharan Africa also accounted for around 70 per cent of the world’s maternal deaths in 2023, roughly 182,000 women, according to the World Health Organization.

What we build
Now, with your support, we are building medical clinics serving the poor in rural Africa. Every centre includes:
- a purpose-built clinic
- outpatient care for adults and children
- antenatal care, safe delivery and postnatal follow-up
- a modern laboratory with the latest diagnostic equipment
- an on-site dispensary
Quality provision
On 14 September, Humanity First opened the Masroor Centre for Healthcare on the outskirts of Abidjan in Ivory Coast: a hospital with surgical theatres, an intensive care unit, a high-quality laboratory and a full diagnostic suite. Our rural centres will carry similar equipment, bringing that quality of care closer to rural communities.
