Sisters Around the Globe

A women's health programme, by women, for women. Born in Nairobi in 2023 to end period poverty, and the missed school, lost confidence and isolation that come with it.

By women, for women

Sisters Around the Globe is the Humanity First UK women's health programme. A group of women launched it in Nairobi in 2023 to tackle period poverty and menstrual hygiene head-on. What began as a pilot in Kenya now runs right across our network, pairing practical support with the education and dignity that lets a girl stay in school and thrive.

Why it's needed

Period poverty steals an education

Period poverty is when a woman or girl lacks the products, facilities, education or dignity she needs to manage her period. In Kenya, 65% of women and girls live with it.

The cost reaches far beyond one week a month. Girls miss lessons, fall behind, and drop out. Cultural stigma and gender discrimination deepen the harm, holding women back from equality, work and education, and leaving girls vulnerable to exploitation.

Started in Kenya, now around the globe

The pilot worked. After research showed one in ten girls in Kenya was missing school each month because of her period, our women set out to change it, and the model proved itself fast.

Sisters Around the Globe has since rolled out across our entire network, carrying the same promise to women and girls wherever we work.
